Construction materials websites: what builders and tradies need

What does a builder actually need from a concrete supplier’s website at 6 am on a Tuesday?

I have seen construction sites in every country in the world, and the people who order materials are the same everywhere: practical, short on time, on a phone. When I audited Holcim Australia, the website was built for investors, not for them. Here is how I would put the buyer first, step by step.

Step by step

01

News instead of ordering

The first screen should start ordering, not show corporate news.

02

One path for everyone

A homeowner with a small job and a contractor on a large project need different journeys. Give each their own path.

03

No calculator

A simple concrete volume calculator answers the first question every small customer has.

04

Plants are hard to find

A finder that shows the nearest plant or quarry with hours and phone number.

05

Broken links on key products

A flagship product that leads to a 404 page costs orders every day.

Concept · our vision

Example: a concept for Holcim Australia

Holcim Australia supplies concrete and aggregates from 226 plants and quarries. I audited its public website and built a concept. This is my vision, not the official Holcim website.

  • Three paths: small job, account customer, large project
  • Concrete volume calculator
  • Nearest-site finder across all 226 locations
  • Concrete grade guide
  • Quote request form

The bottom line

A materials website should start an order, not tell a corporate story. Give small jobs and big projects their own paths, add a calculator and a nearest-plant finder, and the site becomes a sales tool.
